Clover LEAF, a local nonprofit foundation supporting Clover teachers through mini-grants, is hosting Taste of the Town on Feb. 5 at Clover High School.
This is the first group fundraiser in more than four years, said Mychal Frost, district public information officer and Clover LEAF member. In the past, Clover LEAF has held a golf tournament and silent auction.
“We wanted to do something a little different and highlight local restaurants,” Frost said. “It’s a social event.”
Clover LEAF members Lamay Vannavong and Sherri Cuirlik hatched the idea this past summer.
“We hope doing something different will get more people interested and let people know what Clover LEAF is about,” Vannavong said. “We do hope to do it again next year. We’re hoping to get more restaurants involved.”
She said they are excited about the ones who have committed. Local restaurants are happy to be a part of the event to promote teachers and their businesses.
Johnny Funderburk, co-owner of Concord Cove in York, said he decided to join “for acknowledgment and to help out the schools.”
Concord Cove will offer samples of its fried grits.
“It’s something that is different and not many people have it,” he said.
Teresa Yardborough, manager of Lake Wylie Pizza & Italian Restaurant, said the event helps everyone. The restaurant will offer Blackened Chicken Alfredo and Meatballs.
“It’s a favorite,” she said. “Pizza is our signature, but pastas are very popular.”
Other food samplings will be available from Willow Sweets Custom Cakes of Clover, Carolina Chocolate Co. in Lake Wylie and Chartwells, the district food service provider serving Beef Wellington on Puff Pastries and Mini Cheesecakes.
“Obviously, they are showcasing some of their higher-end capabilities,” Frost said.
Other restaurants are welcome to join in, Frost said.
Since 1987, more than $100,000 has been given to teachers, Frost said. The group – made up of 30 community members, mostly former educators –averages 12 grants of $1,000 per year.
Clover Middle School’s Memorial Garden got a grant recently, Frost said.
“It started as instructional garden and has been a catalyst for other projects,” he said. “Their $1,000 gift has made a greater impact.”
The event date was planned to coincide with “Della’s Diner,” part of the CSDA Performing Arts Series. Taste of Town admission includes the play.
Only 100 tickets will be sold. Tickets cost $35 per person or $50 per couple and are available at Clover School District administration building, 604 Bethel St.
